Sacramento Car Museum
location:Sacramento
Leader: Linda von Merveldt
A small group of us braved the wet and stormy conditions of the day to visit this museum, which is a treasure that is rightfully considered one of the top attractions of Sacramento. Our tour began with an explanation of the museum displays by a volunteer docent, after which we all strolled through the exhibits at our own pace. We’d given ourselves two hours to tour the Museum, which was plenty of time to take in the permanent and temporary exhibits. Before departing for lunch, we gathered at the entrance tables and enjoyed a bit of relaxation while those of us with quarters in change played tunes from the jukebox which was set up for the entertainment of visitors. Lunch took place at nearby Sellands Restaurant, and the Board held it’s first meeting of the year.
MARCH
Date: march 19 AND 20, 2024 JACK LONDON STATE HISTORIC PARK
LOCATION: GLEN ELLEN, CA LEADErs: Patrick and Linda VON MERVELDT
This two-day event had eight participants in total. On day one, six of us, in three cars, made the drive to St. Helena in our Jaguars, departing from Winters and driving to St. Helena over scenic Highway 128, taking us past Lake Berryessa and the eerie “Glory Hole” installed as a unique spillway for Monticello Dam. We had lunch on our arrival in St. Helena and regrouped for dinner at the CIA Culinary Institute’s Gatehouse Restaurant. The following day, we traveled on to Glen Ellen, and the Jack London State Historic Park for a docent-led tour of the Museum there, the Cottage where Jack and his wife Charmian lived, and the ruins of the “Wolf House” which built by the couple as their main residence, but which tragically burned just weeks before its completion. The Park is located in the beautiful “Valley of the Moon” with spectacular natural beauty as the backdrop for the fascinating story of Jack London and his adventurous life.
